U.S. to Impose 36% Tariff on Cambodian Imports Starting August 1, 2025

Washington, D.C. – The United States government has announced a new trade policy targeting Cambodian imports, citing concerns over a persistent trade imbalance and lack of reciprocal market access. Beginning August 1, 2025, a 36% tariff will be applied to all goods imported from Cambodia, in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs.

In a formal letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Cambodia, U.S. leadership expressed its desire to continue economic cooperation but emphasized the need for more balanced and fair trade. Officials pointed to Cambodia’s tariff and non-tariff barriers as contributing to what they describe as a “long-term and unsustainable trade deficit” that threatens both the U.S. economy and national security.

“Despite the current trade imbalance, we are committed to moving forward with Cambodia, but under a more equitable framework,” the letter stated. “These new tariffs are intended to address long-standing issues related to Cambodia’s restrictive trade policies.”

The U.S. also warned that any increase in Cambodian tariffs on American products would result in an equivalent increase on Cambodian exports. However, the policy offers a pathway for Cambodian businesses to avoid these tariffs—by relocating production or establishing manufacturing operations within the United States. In such cases, the U.S. has pledged to provide expedited support for necessary approvals and permits.

The statement leaves the door open for future negotiation, suggesting that tariff rates may be adjusted based on improvements in bilateral trade relations or changes in Cambodia’s market access policies.

U.S. officials reaffirmed their commitment to a productive partnership, encouraging Cambodia to open its markets and reduce existing trade barriers. The letter concluded with an assurance that the U.S. remains a strong and reliable trade partner for countries that pursue mutual economic benefit.
