On the afternoon of September 26, 2016, the Ministry of Commerce signed the MoU with the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP) to implement Microsoft’s Translator Hub-Khmer project.
At the signing ceremony held at the AUPP, H.E. SOK Sopheak, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, said that the collaboration will help promote the national information technology sector and provide many great benefits to Cambodian people. “The Ministry of Commerce has seen the AUPP is the only university that can provide quality human resources for this work and it is also the opportunity for the students to work with Microsoft company through the Ministry,” H.E. Sopheak added.
Professor Dr. Nial Farrell, Acting Rector for the study’s affairs of the AUPP said it is an honor for the AUPP to partner with the Ministry of Commerce for the Translation Hub-Khmer project, as well as other projects. “Our students are now ready to implement the project; they were also inspired to share the knowledge obtained from this project to develop the country in the present as well as in the future,” said Dr. Nial.
According to the MoU, the AUPP is tasked to provide human resources, expertise, and other resources to input data in the form of words and sentences of at least 100,000 phrases (in Khmer and English), which will be used for translation in computer systems and other Microsoft programs. It then has to collaborate with the Ministry of Commerce to design and conduct training programs to officials of the Ministry and other relevant institutions.
